Last night I started printing my final images for the upcoming Restart show at Northwest Worklofts and tried to do some experiments using the Epson 2200 ICM profiles. Specifically I set the source space to be my document’s Nikon sRGB space(LS-4000 scanner) and the print space to the Epson 2200 Semigloss_PK profile using both Relative and Perceptual conversions. Unfortunately in all cases I ended up with a gigantic color shift where all the whites in the image went to pink. I soft-proofed the image using the same printer profile and it showed only a slight color shift, actually more of a loss of brightness than a color shift, but nothing like this pink tone. I should note that I tried changing the printer driver settings betwen ICM, sRGB, None and Custom with ColorControls on, all enhancements off, all of which produced the exact same output. So I’m definitely doing something wrong in Photoshop. Switching back to a paper space of “Same as source.” still produces wonderful images which I’ll use for my finals, but I’d really like to get my soft-proofing all worked out for better WYSIWYG editing.
So a question goes out to anyone using Photoshop 7 and specific printer+paper profiles, what settings are you using to get true on-screen proofing that matches your printed output? Better yet, what books can you recommend on Photoshop 7 printing?

I inherited an old G3 Apple iMac at work a few weeks back and I’m in love. Though slow and not having much RAM it was still able to handle OS X 10.2 in stride and browses the web faster than my monster XP machine thanks to the new Safari browser. In fact, I dig the little sucker so much I’m going to try and port the product I’m working on in order to learn more about OS X. Of course this means I’m going to have to buy a Mac.
Currently I’m browsing around EBay trying to find a somewhat new yet used G4 Titanium PowerBook. The new 17″ model is a dream machine but even the smallest 12″ model starts at $1800 and I’m looking to pay much less than that. How do I get myself into these things anyhow?

Yesterday I found out that my Blurry Nights photo series was chosen to be part of an upcoming First Thursday gallery showing at Northwest Worklofts in Seattle. The show is comprised of 17 or so artists, all young/up and coming who want to show off some new work. Because the show is so large I’ll only be putting up 4 prints at most. Regardless, this will be the first time I’ve ever had a public showing and I’m excited. Now it’s time to put together frames, do final prints and cut the mat boards. The show will take place Thursday March 6th and close the following day, Friday 7th. Please come down and take a look. Last time I was there they had some fantastic pieces.
If you are interested in showing your own work or recommending someone for the show feel free to contact Re:start about the next show.

The President has supposedly said that he wants to know what the American people think about a war with Iraq. The White House opinion line telephone number is (202) 456-1111 and you can call between 9-5PM EST Monday through Friday. HOWEVER, this telephone line is simply a White House Comment line and there is no evidence that your calls will be tallied and forwarded to the President.
If you are in fact interested in voicing your opinion about the possible war then you should contact your senators and representatives directly. Whether you are for or against war I think letting your Senators know what you think is important.

I hate corporate sponsored holidays that are intended to guilt or shame us into buying presents for people like my girlfriend who I already love, adore and heap loads of abuse upon every single day in a spasmatic way of showing my unending affection.
So have a Happy Valentine’s Day and tell Hallmark to Kiss Your Ass!

I figured if I’m going to get into blogging then I’d better setup my OWN blogging application on my web server. One tool I’d always heard about was Moveabletype.org so I decided to give it a try. I have to admit it’s VERY cool and was pretty easy to setup if you know how to use FTP and have cgi-bin available. My ISP Powweb.com had every Perl module under the sun installed as well as the latest versions of Perl and Php so installation was a synch. Getting the html templates to merge into my site was probably the hardest thing to do but once done it looked great. I still need to clean up the archive pages but for now this will do. Oh, and the coolest thing? I’ve now got an RSS feed!

After downloading and subsequently buying some awesome tunes by For Against from their label’s site, Words-On-Music, I got to thinking about the future of music distribution. By now everyone is familiar with the RIAA, Napster and the general mess that the music industry has created by not being proactive and addressing on-line music distribution. The sensible people I know agree that the artists need to get paid. Better yet, they wish more money went to them rather than the ancient distribution system that the fat cats are trying to keep alive by artificially hoisting CD prices. Strangely I think we’re only inches away in some respects. Look at it like this:
Today I heard a band on my favorite streaming radio station KEXP. Their on-line playlist listed the band name so I did a Google search and came up with their label’s site. Cool, click through and get their bio and review. Strangely enough this progressive label has two CD-quality clips on the site. I listen, I love, I want to buy. Even cooler there’s an Order button on the screen, I click, I hit Add To Cart and bam, I get a shopping cart with the choice of using PayPal. I’m in absolute love! Not only do I get to easily buy this great artist direct from the label using my favorite payment system PayPal (more anonymity than a credit card), I only paid $10.00. I’m assuming the price is low because it’s straight from the label hence the RIAA and their cronies aren’t taking a chunk. Maybe I’m being naive and the band is locked in the basement I’m going to go out on a limb and think otherwise.
Of course this situation could have been even better if they, in their purchase confirmation e-mail also sent a secure link and password where I could download the MP3s. They’ve already got my cash, I’m going to have the CD in 3 days at which time I’m going to rip it to my archive, put it on my iPod and let the CD collect dust in the basement, so why not the MP3s? Better yet, why don’t more small labels start doing this (maybe they are, I haven’t looked just yet)? Does this very cool new search tool link directly to the labels site where one can listen to and buy the music? Sure, Amazon, but why not directly to the label? I’d rather give them $15 and let the extra $5 go the artists so they can eat rather the RIAA so they can lobby congress for more DRM solutions.
My first rant. Excellent.
