Switching to the Mac : A Community Speaks

May 15th, 2004

I have to say thanks to everyone for the amazing responses to my last “Switching to the Mac” blog entry. I had initially locked my blog for comments because I was being deluged with SPAM. However something made me decide to unlock this entry in the off case one or two people might find it of interest and respond. Wow, I was very very right! I’m overly impressed at how many people actually found my entry. Where did you all come from, Google, a blog index? Please let me know, I’m fascinated and I would like to find others in the same manner.

Now thank you for all the references. I am going to try out Adium X as my next IM client. I was previously using Fire but found it lacking in fit and finish and also suffering from occasional flame outs due to IM protocol changes. With IM fundamental to my daily existence I dropped it in favor of YIM. Adium looks to be a very good alternative, I’m exited to try it out. Quicksilver also looks to be another essentail piece of Mac software that I’m missing out on. I plan on installing it and learning what it can do for me.

As for my use of iMail instead of Mail, thanks for the correction. I find this inconsistent product naming very annoying. iCal, iTunes, iPhoto…is iMail not an intuitive name with those in mind? Please though, let’s not rat-hole on that, I will call it Mail from now on. Thanks for the correction ;) Speaking of Mail, I actually flipped a bit again and have setup a new user account on my machine dedicated to work. I use Mail for Exchange mail and iCal+SnerdWare’s GroupCal to get my Exchange calendar. Mail is AWESOME, the threaded view just works so very well for my daily email. I’m actually no longer using my work PC with Outlook, finding Mail as my daily client. So far so good but I’m not sure GroupCal from snerdware is the right answer. Anyone else using iCal to access Exchange?

Coming soon to my blog : Backup – What’s the best way to backup my Mac using my new LaCie 160GB Firewire drive? I’m going to find out, got any suggestions?
